Up your nose—Down your throat.

WARNING: If you ever see that ski slope banana nose in the photo above, in your hospital at age 70-90 something…Do not put the tube in!

So the other day at work a coworker says, “are you busy?” Of course I am never to busy to help someone else because I absolutely understand what it is like to be in in need; that is desperato as work is attempting to get done.

Oh the age old story of the the ninety something patient: Confused, combative etc….The family says YES! Sure it would be a great idea to put in an NGT that is a nasogastic tube: Up the nose and hopefully into the gastric area as opposed to the inside the bronchial tree. (that happened to me before)

So here we are…2 fairly new nurses getting ready to do this, accomplish this unfruitful mission of forcing a rubber tube: up your nose with a rubber hose to MEDICATE a man.

SO what happened: Well after 2 attempts the tube kept coiling and coming out of the patients mouth! I was mortified! The patient could not follow commands to swallow as we advanced the tube. Finally we found the MD who put is whole hand in the patients mouth to prevent the tube from coiling or coming out.
